IBS Indulgences- Holiday Edition

IBS Indulgences- Holiday Edition

I hope everyone had a great Labor Day Weekend! With extended days off filled with cookouts, cold cocktails, & beach days, you may have eaten some not so “IBS Friendly” foods this past weekend. I know I did! Whether you drank too much alcohol, had dairy or gluten, ate high FODMAP foods, or all of the above, don’t beat yourself up about it! IBS Sisters deserve to live our lives to the fullest just like everyone else!

You may have noticed that when you were eating foods you normally wouldn’t dare eat this past weekend (I had champagne and hush puppies!), your symptoms weren’t all that bad. If this is the case, it could be that your flare ups are worse during the weekdays during stressful times, so good for you for relaxing this weekend! Make sure you keep that relaxing mindset into this short work week, your tummy will thank you!

Here is my guide to getting back on my IBS Sister Lifestyle after a holiday:

1. Don’t skip breakfast. You may feel like you need to cut calories after indulging or give your digestion a break, but skipping breakfast will just make you over indulge later in the day. Try having a green goddess smoothie in the recipes section for a tummy friendly breakfast & to give you the energy you need to get back in the swing of things!

2. Don’t freak out. It’s easy to get flustered about a bloated belly, stomach aches, or whatever symptoms you’re having from a weekend of indulging, but working yourself up about it will only make it worse. Just take a deep breath, & get back on track TODAY!

3. Juicing. A lot of women, IBS Sisters & non, swear by juicing to give your digestive tract a break. I’ve tried this before, & would recommend it if you haven’t tried it! If you have a juicer, go green with your ingredients to heal the gut. Trader Joe’s also has a green juice at a reasonable price!

4. Sweat it out. After work, I’ll be hitting the gym! I tried the morning workout tactics for getting up early and going to the gym, but my husband snoozing the alarm was not helpful this morning! πŸ™‚ We’re all tired from a fun filled weekend, but if you skipped this morning, go this evening! I plan on walking & jogging on the treadmill, and sweating it out afterwards in the sauna. Don’t forget your pre-workout snack & to crank up your favorite tunes!

5. Eat at home this week. You may have over indulged on your diet & bank account this past holiday weekend. Not only will taking your lunch to work this week & skipping cocktail hour with friends on Wednesday night save you money, your gut will also thank you. Eating out can make it harder to follow an IBS friendly diet and the foods can can contain more sodium than your bloated belly can handle. Also, the mid week drinking can make it harder to get over any flare ups you may have. It’s temporary, you can do it! πŸ™‚

6. Stay hydrated. Summer may be technically over & you may have retired your white linen pants for the year, but it’s still hot outside! So, drink up! H20 that is πŸ™‚
