IBS Sister’s Sisterly Time of Month

IBS Sister’s Sisterly Time of Month

The majority of women have experienced a menstrual cycle at some point in their lives, and we all know that it can be pretty miserable. If you’re one of the 50 percent of IBS sisters that have increased symptoms during that time of month, you know it can be VERY miserable.

Hormones. Thank these little guys and girls for your pain! Increased progesterone during your cycle can trigger uterine cramping, which can also lead to spasms of your gastro muscles. All a Sister can say is, ouch! Some women with IBS have more cramping, bloating, abdominal pain, gas, & diarrhea during their cycle. The only good thing about it is, for an IBS-C Sister, you may experience more bowel movements during your cycle.

So now we know why we suffer more than other non-IBS sisters, what can we do to alleviate our increased symptoms?

Go Bananas! Bananas have key vitamins and nutrients that can be a natural remedy for PMS. The potassium rich food can also help with bloating. I eat a banana every day! (Not too ripe if you’re on low-FODMAP).

Pick Pineapple! Any fruit high in manganese can help to decrease blood flow, and since this fruit also has bromelain, an enzyme that helps relax muscles and prevent cramping, this yummy tropical fruit is a win-win! It’s also low-FODMAP, so does that make it a win-win-win? 🙂

Heating pads and hot packs can be your best friend during this time! While your curled up on the couch wishing you could eat a pint of ice cream, watching Netflix, relax with something hot on your belly! It will relax your stomach muscles.

Just like the usual IBS sister behavior, make sure you are staying hydrated, eating lean food, eating small portions frequently versus large meals, & getting in your exercise during your cycle. Your body will thank you more rhan ever during this time!
